Deep button-tufted cushions in faux leather float inside a polished cast-aluminum frame, on a five-star swivel base with casters — a faithful take on the 1960 design Charles and Ray Eames created for the Time & Life Building. Choose black, white or mint green.

About the Design

In 1960 Charles and Ray Eames were asked to furnish the lobbies of the new Time & Life Building in New York. Their answer was a chair with the comfort of a lounge seat and the bearing of an office chair: thick cushions held between two cast-aluminum side frames, wide enough to sink into and upright enough to work in. It has been known ever since as the Time-Life chair, the Lobby chair or simply the Executive chair. Its reputation for long-sitting comfort spread well beyond offices — Bobby Fischer asked for one at the 1972 World Chess Championship in Reykjavík. This chair follows the same recipe: a seat and two separate back cushions with button tufting and piped edges, padded armrests carried by the aluminum frame, and a swivel base on casters. It suits a home office or study as easily as a conference table.

Materials & Craftsmanship

Upholstery: faux leather with a soft pebbled grain, button-tufted back cushions, a tufted seat and piped edges — animal-free and easy to wipe clean

Frame: two polished cast-aluminum side frames that carry the cushions and the padded armrests

Base: a polished cast-aluminum five-star base on five twin-wheel casters, with 360° swivel

Adjustment: an under-seat lever for seat height and a knob for tilt tension

Colors: black, white or mint green — the same frame and base on all three

Specifications

Upholstery

Faux leather, button-tufted, piped edges

Frame

Polished cast-aluminum side frames with padded armrests

Base

Polished cast-aluminum five-star base, 5 twin-wheel casters

Adjustment

Seat-height lever, tilt-tension knob, 360° swivel

Colors

Black · White · Mint Green

Weight

46.3 lbs (21 kg)

Care

Wipe the faux leather with a soft, slightly damp microfiber cloth and dry it straight away; use only mild soap on marks and avoid alcohol-based cleaners, acetone and abrasive sponges.
