The private dining room is the most valuable square meterage in hospitality — one table, one party, one impression. It has to feel different from the main floor the moment the door closes. The room below does it with three moves: a hand-painted landscape mural behind the table, a ring of black Pierre Jeanneret Chandigarh cane armchairs, and a metre-wide Akari washi paper pendant hung low like a full moon. Here is the complete design board — walls, floor, table, seating and light — so you can build the same room for a restaurant PDR, a hotel salon, or a formal dining room at home.
Move 1 · The Envelope: mural, grasscloth & black timber
The room reads as luxurious because the walls are treated as one composed elevation, not four painted surfaces. A mural wall gives the table something to face; grasscloth panels warm everything the mural doesn't cover; black timber frames the whole picture.
- Feature wall: hand-painted (or printed) silk panels with a pine-and-pavilion shan shui landscape — misty cliffs, a waterfall, one vermilion pavilion for a single hit of red. Run it floor-to-ceiling behind the table, divided into vertical panels with slim black glazing bars.
- Flanking walls: raw-silk or jute grasscloth panels in warm camel (close to Sherwin-Williams "Camelback" SW 6122 as a paint fallback), framed by wide black timber mouldings.
- Timber & columns: stain or paint all trim, columns and wainscot near-black — Sherwin-Williams "Tricorn Black" SW 6258 or Benjamin Moore "Black Beauty" 2128-10 in a matte finish.
- The red accent: one lacquered display niche in cinnabar red (Farrow & Ball "Blazer" No.212 territory) with a few ceramics — it echoes the pavilion in the mural and the lacquer tabletop.
- Flooring: large-format matte charcoal porcelain (60 × 120 cm) or honed slate, with a flat-weave wool rug in oat/greige to zone the table and soften acoustics — critical in a hard-surfaced private room.
Move 2 · The Anchor Chair: black Chandigarh cane armchairs
Pierre Jeanneret's Chandigarh armchair — the compass-leg, floating-cane-back office chair he designed for the Capitol Complex in the 1950s — is one of the few mid-century chairs that feels at home in an Asian-inspired interior: the hand-woven cane speaks the same craft language as washi paper and grasscloth. In stained black oak the silhouette turns graphic, standing out against the camel walls the way the glazing bars frame the mural.
It also earns its place in hospitality on practical grounds: a solid-oak frame, a breathable woven-cane back that guests can sit against for a three-hour dinner, armrests that invite lingering, and a loose bouclé seat cushion that can be re-covered or replaced without touching the chair.
- The chair: Pierre Jeanneret Chandigarh Rattan/Cane Dining Chairs, Set of 4 — choose the Stained Black Oak finish for this look (the solid-walnut version suits warmer, wood-clad rooms). Two sets ring an 8-seat round table.
- For a lounge corner: the fully upholstered Chandigarh Capitol Complex Armchairs, Set of 2 make an aperitif corner by the window, and the low Kangaroo lounge chair suits a reception nook outside the door.
- Upholstery note: keep cushions in undyed bouclé or oatmeal linen — texture, not colour. The room's only strong colours stay in the lacquer and the mural.
Move 3 · The Table & the Moon: cinnabar lacquer under a washi globe
The table is where East and mid-century meet. A round pedestal table in blackened oak with a cinnabar-lacquer top and inset lazy susan keeps the shared-dining banquet tradition, while the sculptural cone base stays resolutely modern. Dress it sparingly: one orchid centerpiece, gold-toned napkins picking up the mural's warm light, dark rimmed plates that let the lacquer glow.
Above it, a round Akari washi paper pendant does what no chandelier can: it gives a tall, dark room a soft, weightless centre of light. Isamu Noguchi's 1951 design — mulberry-bark washi over bamboo ribs — throws a completely even, diffused glow that flatters food and faces alike, and its papery lightness balances the visual weight of all that black timber.
- The light: Akari Washi Paper Pendant, 100A (Ø 100 cm) — the metre-wide globe is the right scale for a banquet round in a full-height room.
- Hanging height: bottom of the globe roughly 75–90 cm (30–36 in) above the tabletop. In a double-height PDR you can cheat slightly higher so the globe hangs level with the mural's focal band, as here.
- Bulb: warm 2700 K, dimmable — dim to 30 % for dessert and the paper reads like a lantern at a night market.
- Table sizing: Ø 150–160 cm seats 8 with a Ø 80–90 cm lazy susan; allow at least 90 cm of clearance from table edge to wall for service circulation.
Which Akari size for which room?
- 55A (Ø 60 cm): intimate 2–4 seat alcoves, booths, low ceilings.
- 75A (Ø 80 cm): the standard 4–6 seat private table under a normal 2.7–3 m ceiling.
- 100A (Ø 100 cm): 6–10 seat banquet rounds, double-height rooms, and anywhere the pendant must hold its own as the focal point — the size in this room.
Keep the globe a little narrower than the table, and never let it block sightlines across the party — with a round table and a single centred globe, everyone still sees everyone.
