Description

Designed by Pierre Jeanneret in the 1950s for the residences of Chandigarh, India, the Kangaroo Lounge Chair (PJ-SI-25-A) is instantly recognizable by its low sled base, sharply pitched cane back and crouched, animal-like stance. Our faithful reproduction is offered in natural solid teak or a stained black finish.

About Pierre Jeanneret

Pierre Jeanneret (1896–1967) was a Swiss-French architect and the lifelong collaborator of his cousin Le Corbusier. From 1951 to 1965 he lived in Chandigarh, where the two led the planning of India's new state capital for Punjab. While Le Corbusier shaped the Capitol Complex, Jeanneret quietly oversaw the city's housing, schools and university — and designed an entire family of furniture to fill them.

The Kangaroo Chair belongs to the residential series Jeanneret created for the homes of Chandigarh's administrators. Built in local teak with woven cane backs and seats, these pieces blended European modernism with Indian craft and climate. Long overlooked, the originals are now museum-grade collectibles, held in the collections of MoMA and the V&A and regularly featured at major auction houses.

Materials & Craftsmanship

Our reproduction follows the proportions and joinery of Jeanneret's original Chandigarh design:

  • Frame: solid teak wood, offered in natural finish or a stained black (ebony) finish, with hand-finished edges on the trapezoidal side panels and angled sled base.
  • Back and seat: hand-woven natural Indonesian cane, set into mortise-and-tenon teak frames in the traditional open weave used throughout the Chandigarh series.
  • Finish: sealed with premium, eco-friendly wood stains that highlight teak's natural grain on the natural variant and produce a deep, matte ebony on the black variant.

Because cane is a natural material, slight tonal variation and minor surface burrs are expected and soften with use.

Care & Assembly

The Kangaroo Chair ships flat-packed and assembles in roughly 15–20 minutes using the included hardware and tools. Tighten all fasteners fully once the frame is upright, then re-check after the first week of use.

For the teak: dust regularly and wipe with a barely damp cloth. Apply a teak or hard-wax oil two to three times a year on the natural finish to preserve its warm tone; the stained black variant only needs an occasional polish with a soft cloth. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which can fade both finishes, and keep the chair away from radiators and damp basements — teak and cane both dislike extremes of dryness or humidity. Brush the cane with a soft cloth or vacuum brush attachment to clear dust from the weave.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Chandigarh furniture?

"Chandigarh furniture" refers to the pieces Pierre Jeanneret designed between 1951 and 1965 for Chandigarh, India — the new state capital of Punjab planned by Jeanneret and Le Corbusier. Made locally in teak and cane, the furniture filled government offices, the university and administrators' residences. Today the originals are highly sought-after collectibles.

Natural teak or stained black — which finish should I choose?

The natural teak shows open grain and warms toward honey-amber over time, pairing well with linen, jute and other mid-century pieces. The stained black reads more graphic and architectural, throwing the cane back into sharper relief in darker or more contemporary interiors. Both share the same frame, cane and proportions.

How comfortable is it for long sitting?

The Kangaroo is a low, reclined lounge chair (seat height 13.9") meant for relaxed reading and conversation rather than upright desk work. The pitched cane back has a gentle spring that flexes with the sitter. Many owners pair it with a small ottoman or sheepskin throw for extended lounging.

How do I care for the cane and teak?

Dust the cane with a soft cloth or vacuum brush; spot-clean with a barely damp cloth and dry immediately. Oil the natural teak two to three times a year; the stained black finish needs only an occasional polish. Avoid direct sun, radiators and damp environments.

Is this an original Chandigarh piece?

No — this is a faithful reproduction of Jeanneret's PJ-SI-25-A Kangaroo Chair, built in solid teak and hand-woven cane in the Chandigarh tradition. Genuine vintage Chandigarh chairs are auction-house items today, typically selling for many thousands of dollars and held by museums and private collectors. Our version honours the original design and materials at a fraction of that price.
