Frequently Bought Together
Inspired by the USM Haller modular system designed by Fritz Haller and Paul Schärer in 1963, this nightstand brings Swiss precision and Bauhaus rigor to the bedside. A single drop-down drawer paired with an open lower shelf turns a quiet corner into clear, considered storage.
About Fritz Haller & the USM Haller System
Fritz Haller (1924–2012) was a Swiss architect from Solothurn known for his rigorous, grid-based approach to building design. In 1963, he was commissioned by Paul Schärer (1933–2011), then head of the family-owned metalworks USM (Ulrich Schärer Münsingen), to design a new headquarters and an internal furniture system that could grow and adapt with the company. The result, introduced in 1965, was the USM Haller modular system — a kit of chrome-plated steel ball joints, tubular connectors, and powder-coated metal panels that can be assembled into endless configurations of shelves, cabinets, and desks.
The system is now in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. At nightstand scale, the same logic still applies: clean geometry, exposed joinery, and a finish that ages slowly.
Materials & Craftsmanship
Our nightstand follows the visual grammar of the original modular system:
- Frame: chrome-plated steel ball joints and tubular connectors — the signature USM Haller node that locks the structure together without visible fasteners.
- Panels: powder-coated metal panels in Pure White (also offered in Black), evenly coated for a smooth, low-sheen finish.
- Drawer: drop-down door with a soft-close mechanism and a recessed round pull, opening to a single enclosed compartment.
- Open shelf: lower bay sized for stacked books, a small lamp base, or a folded throw.
- Base: adjustable leveling feet to compensate for uneven floors.
Each unit is inspected for panel alignment, joint tension, and powder-coat consistency before shipping.

Care & Assembly
The nightstand arrives fully assembled — unbox, set in place, and adjust the leveling feet if your floor is slightly uneven. No tools required.
To care for the powder-coated panels, dust regularly with a soft dry cloth, then wipe with a slightly damp microfiber cloth if needed. Avoid abrasive sponges, scouring powders, and solvent-based cleaners (acetone, ammonia, bleach) — these can dull or scratch the powder finish over time. The chrome ball joints wipe clean with the same soft cloth; a touch of glass cleaner on a cloth (never sprayed directly) restores their shine. Keep the unit out of prolonged direct sun to preserve the white finish, and out of consistently damp rooms to protect the chrome.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it ship assembled?
Yes. Unlike larger USM Haller configurations that arrive flat-packed, this nightstand-scale unit ships fully assembled in a single carton. You'll only need to remove the protective packaging and adjust the leveling feet to your floor.
What's the weight capacity for a lamp and a book stack?
The top surface comfortably supports around 55 lbs (25 kg) — well beyond a typical bedside lamp, a phone, an alarm clock, and a stack of three or four hardcover books. The open lower shelf is rated for similar weight if you want to store additional reading material or a small basket.
Is the Black variant identical in structure?
Yes. The Pure White and Black versions share the same chrome ball-joint frame, the same drop-down drawer with soft-close, the same open shelf, and the same overall dimensions. Only the powder-coat color of the panels changes. Our current photography shows the Pure White unit; the Black is offered as the same form in a low-sheen black finish.
How do I clean the powder-coat finish?
Dust with a soft dry cloth, then wipe with a barely damp microfiber cloth for fingerprints or light marks. Avoid abrasive pads, scouring powder, and solvent-based cleaners — they can degrade the powder coating. For stubborn marks, a tiny amount of mild dish soap in warm water on a soft cloth works well; dry immediately.
Can I add a second cube on top later?
This unit is a standalone nightstand-scale piece rather than a fully expandable frame, so it isn't designed to be stacked after purchase. If you'd like a multi-cube configuration, plan the final size at the time of order — reach out and we'll help you spec it.
