About Giancarlo Piretti
Giancarlo Piretti (Italian, born 1940) joined Anonima Castelli in Bologna in the 1960s and built his reputation on furniture that solved a single problem with elegant precision. His 1969 Plia folding chair was an engineering breakthrough — a three-disc hinge that collapsed the chair into a profile barely thicker than two stacked plates — and won the Compasso d'Oro before entering the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Assembly is minimal: secure the tabletop to the chrome pedestal with the included hardware, stand the table upright, and lift each leaf until the hinge locks level. To fold for storage, support a leaf with one hand and lower it gently — never let it drop or force the hinge. Wipe the ABS top with a soft, damp cloth and a mild soap solution; avoid abrasive pads and solvents, which can dull the gloss. Polish the chrome base with a dry microfiber cloth, and add a drop of light machine oil to each hinge once a year to keep the fold smooth.
