Description

Designed by Børge Mogensen in 1947 for FDB Møbler, the J39 — known across Denmark as Folkestolen, "The People's Chair" — pairs a Shaker-inspired silhouette with a solid oak frame and a hand-woven paper cord seat. Our reproduction set of 2 brings this democratic Danish icon to the dining table in a warm, dark-stained oak finish.

About Børge Mogensen

Børge Mogensen (1914–1972) was the chief designer of FDB Møbler, the furniture wing of Denmark's consumer co-operative. His mission was unusual for a designer of his stature: well-built furniture that ordinary working families could actually afford. Mogensen studied American Shaker craftsmanship and English country furniture, distilling both into a clean Danish vocabulary built on solid wood, visible joinery and humble materials.

Released in 1947, the J39 became one of the most widely produced chairs in Danish history — a fixture in homes, schools and summer cottages for generations. Mogensen went on to design the J52 and Spoke-back sofa among many other classics, and the J39 is still produced today by Fredericia. Our piece honors that lineage in form, proportion and material.

Materials & Craftsmanship

True to Mogensen's original specification, the J39 is built almost entirely of wood and woven cord — no plastics, no upholstery, nothing to wear out:

  • Frame: solid oak in a dark-stained finish that highlights the oak grain. The legs, stretchers and curved back rail are joined with mortise-and-tenon joinery for a frame that stiffens with use rather than loosening.
  • Backrest: a single shaped oak crest rail set on three vertical spindles — the Shaker quote that gives the chair its quiet, upright posture.
  • Seat: natural paper cord, hand-woven over the seat rails in the traditional envelope pattern. Paper cord is firm at first and gently conforms to the sitter over months of use.

Each chair is inspected for frame alignment, joinery and weave tension before it leaves the workshop.

Care & Assembly

Most customers complete assembly in 15–20 minutes per chair using the included hardware and hex key — no special tools needed.

Paper cord is durable but dislikes water. Vacuum the seat with a soft brush attachment to lift dust from the weave, and spot-clean only with a barely damp cloth, drying immediately. Avoid soaking, steam cleaning, or leaving the chair outside or in a damp basement — moisture is what shortens a paper cord seat's life. The oak frame benefits from an occasional wipe with a soft cloth and, once or twice a year, a light coat of a wood-friendly oil or wax to keep the dark finish even.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the J39 called "The People's Chair"?

Mogensen designed it in 1947 for FDB Møbler, the design arm of Denmark's consumer co-operative, with an explicit social-democratic brief: a high-quality dining chair priced for ordinary working households. Danes nicknamed it Folkestolen — "the chair of the people" — and it became one of the most widely owned chairs in the country.

How does a hand-woven paper cord seat hold up over the years?

Paper cord is twisted from layers of kraft paper and is genuinely strong — well-made paper cord seats routinely last 30–50 years in everyday use. It softens slightly in the first few months as it shapes to the sitter, then stays remarkably stable. The two things to avoid are standing water and constant humidity; treat it like a fine textile, not like leather.

Is light oak available, or only the dark finish?

Currently this listing ships in the dark-stained oak shown in every product image. We're not offering a natural light-oak option in this run, so what you see in the photos is exactly what arrives.

How does Mogensen's work compare to Hans Wegner's?

Mogensen and Wegner were close friends and shared a studio early in their careers. Wegner leaned toward sculptural virtuosity — the Wishbone, the Round Chair. Mogensen leaned the other way: stricter geometry, Shaker restraint, and a focus on affordability and everyday use. The J39 is the clearest example of that quieter, more democratic Mogensen voice.

Is the J39 comfortable to sit on without a cushion?

Yes. The paper cord seat has just enough give to feel comfortable through a long dinner, and the upright Shaker back encourages a relaxed, supported posture. Many owners do add a thin seat pad for very long sitting sessions or for a softer look — the seat dimensions accept a standard square dining-chair cushion.
